The inception of the Chemistry Department was at 1947 with Pre-University Course. B.Sc. Programme was started in the year 1957 followed by M.Sc. Chemistry Programme at 1966. The department has been recognized as a research department since 1967. The department has been awarded with Star Status by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) since 2014. The department constitutes a twelve member faculty having Ph.D. / M.Phil. and NET/SET qualification with rich experience in teaching and research. The department offers under graduate and post-graduate programs with the aim of producing chemists with high professional competence, in carrying out both basic and applied chemistry research.
B.Sc. & M.Sc. Chemistry syllabus provides an integrated and unified approach towards chemical sciences covering all branches of chemistry and following Choice Based Credit System with Outcome Based Education. The curriculum is rigorous in accord to international standards and covers theory and practical courses with full emphasis to construct intellectual assets. In the final semester, the PG students are encouraged to carry out research project in reputed research institutions to enhance their exposure level and placement abilities. The department laboratory is fully equipped with the latest instruments required to carry out practical experiments. The research has been carried out in frontier areas of chemistry such as environmental chemistry, electrochemistry, nano materials, coordination chemistry, organometallic chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, photochemistry, polymer chemistry, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, and green chemistry. The Department has produced 46 Ph.D and 54 M.Phil awardees.
The faculty members have contributed research towards publication of several research papers in national and international conferences and peer reviewed journals. As extension activities, our faculty members and students visit remote villages in training them to develop entrepreneurial skills. The Alumni of our department occupy several high positions across the globe.
OBJECTIVE:
To teach, train and evaluate the students to become graduates who can excel as entrepreneurs, administrators and scientists in educational/research /industrial organization.
To inculcate scientific temper and impart innovative science education.
To educate students to compete globally and also contribute towards development of the society through design of application oriented curriculum.
