The Department of Microbiology at PSGCAS was started as a post graduate research department in the year 1983 and later upgraded leading to research degrees M.Phil and PhD in 1989. Undergraduate programme in Microbiology was introduced in 1993, with sophisticated equipments and state-of-art laboratory facilities. The department has 9 members of staff, of which 7 faculty members hold doctoral degrees. The thrust areas of research in the department include IgY technology-chicken antibodies (development of anti-snake venom antibodies), Textile biotechnology (Development of Natural antimicrobial finishes, alternative textile finishing technology, nanofinishes of textiles, Bioremediation of Textile effluents), algal biotechnology (identification of anticancerous, antiviral and antibacterial bioactive compounds from marine algae), Bioremediation, identification of Antimicrobial chemotherapeutic compounds, plasma textiles, products for drinking water treatment, etc. The department was adjudged as the best Microbiology department in Tamilnadu among the various colleges by AC Neilson survey, Sun TV, Chennai.
