HISTORY AND PROFILE OF THE DEPARTMENT
Statistics Department was established as an Under-Graduate Department in l957 with 18 students in 1973, the department was upgraded into a Post-Graduate Department with the introduction of M.Sc Statistics Programme. In rapid succession, the department advanced further to a research department with the introduction of M.Phil and PhD. programmes in 2000. It has produced many outstanding students with university ranks and excelling in their chosen fields.
The department has a well established Statistical Computing Laboratory with 56 terminals which will enable the students to work independently of each other. The computer system supports the standard statistical software’s SPSS, STATA, SYSTAT and R Language The students will have ample opportunities to get themselves fully trained in the use of these software which will guarantee them immediate placement alter graduation. The salient feature of the department is the practical training both manual and computer based system given by way of conducting Public Opinion and Socio-economic Surveys with NSSO.
From its inception, the department has grown leaps and bounds to reach the current strength of 10 permanent faculty members. Of these, 8 possessing doctoral degree whiles the rest have an M.Phil degree. The faculty of the department serves various other departments by way of teaching allied courses and providing services for other departments in the way of extra departmental courses (UG) and inter departmental course (PG).
Another major highlight of the department is Star Scheme by DBT and had initiation of the Industry Institute Interaction (I.I.I) and has a tie-up to train final year UG students and also more practical training courses with the recent trends.
